I'd say no cause the fool you beat always trys to beat you again and again or drives up your arse or once you beat him at a sensible speed he keeps going. I learned to stop it when I did 70 in a 30 and a police van flashed their lights at me. never again. I even resist on the motorway

Bath road in slough is known for these sort of races - several miles of virtually completely straight dual carriage ways going from center of slough to the edge of maidenhead - passing through the center of slough trading estate...
Millions of junctions, so traffic lights every 1/4 mile or less.
40 limit though
but at night the place is empty, I can guarentee if you ever pull up at any lights on that stretch in a modded car, some one will try to race you off em.
I usually stop at 70 - or if there's a clear winner.
but did come fucking close the other day, came out of slough cruise -my corsa and my mates corsa, a couple of cars tried to race us off the lights and all 4 of us were properly foot down along this stretch doing about 80-90 mph I noticed some blue lights backed off imediately, my mate also backed off as he thought I was just backing off to turn off or something.
But this Seat went flying past a police car parked up at the side of this retail park at about 80 mph - blue lights and they persued them.
the joke is, coz there were 2 of them - they probably got done for racing
I personally felt unsafe over 70 mph, as although its dual carriageway, anything could happen and it is a 40 limit!

I wonder where car enthusiasts get the 'boyracer' stereotype from?

Any racing on public roads is wrong. Yes, I admit I did it a few times, but have learned that its stupidly dangerous.
Keep it for the track.

only up until the speed limit,
i just give up at 40mph,
i only really do it to test my reaction time and not to race.

Thing is, most people that'll race you off the lights is some punk with a little 8v.
My Sxi only really kicks in at higher RPM, and 1st gear is too short to even count.
So its only in 2nd and 3rd gear as its on cam that I can pull away.
So if I raced till 40 and stopped - I would probably be level with most cars that I race.
40 mph is as I'd be edging away. 50-70 in 3rd happens so fast. you just pull away when your in the power.
Providing your racing a punk in a smallish cc'd engine'd car.

Mate, I'm disapointed in you - since you used to be an Sxi Owner
But, you trying to tell me that when you floor it in your Sxi at 1.5k rpm, you got the same effect as when you floored it at 3.5k rpm???
Since its lack of power, it only has a the power in the power band (on cam)...
Whats funny?

I have to admit to doing this but it isnt safe.
You could argue that accelerating at speed below the speed limit is legal and therefore as safe as anyother way, as passengers dont cross dual carriage ways, however, after recently thrashing some idiot in a fiesta off the lights in my calibra he pursued me on my spoiler so I did 30 mph exactly for three miles , some people take losing badly
Drive safely and sensibly and if your gonna loose do it with some dignity and dont be too surprised as theres always another car faster

mate the acceleration when i put my foot down at low revs was always the same as high revs = crap
my clio comes on between 4-7k revs where the acceleration changes significantly
this is my understanding of the term coming on cam

Sounds like your Air Flow Meter was screwed then mate, mine was a little while ago - sounds like a common problem, basically makes the fuel mixture too weak higher up the rev range - so you don't really feel any difference wherever you are Rpm wise.
On mine, 'off cam' say 1-3k rpm It accelerates so slow. As soon as it gets past this 3.5k->5.5k it flies round the revs 'on cam' (as the cams are set to be working properly at this rpm)
But yes, my car is rather slow compared to your clio - Swine.
I want a 106 gti, but insurance is a bitch
