would a Sony 480W (200W RMS) Amplifier be able to run a Sony 15" 1400W (400W RMS) subwoofer smoothly? or would i need a more powerful amp??

You would need more power.

As a general rule you should match the impedance and rms of the amp to that of the sub.

If your sony sub is 400w rms @ 4 ohms you want an amp that runs 400w rms (or slightly more) @ 4 ohms.
