On my way home yesterday i noticed my temp gauage was staying up past 100 and that my fan was constantly on. So i checked my water level and it was drained. So i filled it right up and left it overnight. Checked it first thing this morning and it was still topped up
But then when i started it today small amounts of nasty blue smoke appeared from my exhaust and the idle was very lumpy, it sounded like it was misfiring or struggling to stay running. Anyway i proceeded to drive off and everything was relatively fine except for there seemed to be more steem/smoke then normal from the exhaust. Might have been due to frost Not sure.
But now everytime it idles it struggles and makes the noises again, but when you get moving it is totally fine. The fan doesnt come on now as the water levels are still high even after a 13 mile round trip. But as i left it on my drive idling it made the same sounds again, so i rev'd it a little and LOTS of blue stinking smoke came from my exhaust.
Also there is no mayo like substance under my oil cap And i just checked my water levels and they are still fine.
I'm fearing its my head gasket but preying its not. What else might it be? CAT maybe?
Anyone help???

Also the smoke isnt very blue but its not normal i know that much. Its definately not white either, its a nasty grey with a blue tint to it.
Head gasket would produce white smoke wouldnt it??
This is gash!!

It had a service in either December 03 or January 04, cant remember which. Do they not change the spark plugs then? If not i really hope its just the spark plugs
The engine is a 1.4 16v btw

No and no, thats what makes me think it may not be the head gasket. I am stumped on this one.

I agree, that is the perfect excuse for a valver conversion. If my engine is wanked then i shall seriously look into it. Why spend £400+ on repairing a 1.4 16v 90BHP when for just a little bit more i could have a 2.0 16v 155BHP

Which of the two would be worse Adam? Piston rings or head gasket?
Would mean me having to find the funds but needs must i suppose.

if its head gasket its a few hours labour and new gasket going on the fact the head isnt warped and doesnt need skimming etc etc
if the piston rings are shot then you have to pull the whole engine apart
you could be lucky and get a new head gasket and itll work
or you could take the head off and ther could be allsorts of problems.
get a compession test done this will help you decide

My friends dad is currently in the process of borrowing a tester from his mate. The damage will help me decide whether to pursue the 2litre route. If the cost of repair is more than £400 then a 2litre is going in for sure.

Not particularly.
UPDATE:
Just this minute checked my car and I now believe its the head gasket as there are slight traces of the mayo like substance on my dipstick. None under oil cap though.

Be quiet you or you'll end up costing me lots of money! My mates dad is a mechanic so the head gasket may not cost too much for moi But then again.....................155BHP..........hmmmmm I'll see what happens about mine then i may get some insurance quotes on mine being a 2litre.
