Just drove almost 200 miles to go pick up the astra GTE donor car, and get stopped by the police coming out of a service station on the way back, and have already been given a producer! I didnt have insurance on me though, so what will i need to take down? Im insured fully comp on the corsa, and the guy who owned the astra is still insured on it, and i had his written permission to drive it back meaning i was covered TPFT. Do i just need to take my insurance, or a copy of his too?

you just take your insurance document down, it will say on that, that your insured 3rd party to drive anyother car providing you have permission, then they might check u had permission and everything will be fine, dont need his insurance coz its nowt to do with it if your driving.

that sounds ok to me - the astra bloke has the car still insured ( so the car is insured) and your just driving it third party off your own policy right -

so i think you'll need some proof that the astra (or permission) is insured and some proof that your insurance covers you mate

the only time it might be a problem is if theastra wasn't insured, because then your policy wouldn't cover it.

it wudnt matter if the car wasnt insured, my mate had a escort, and his musis used to drive it, so he got a cav, and drove that round, the cav wasnt insured, only him as 3rd party from his fully comp policy on the escort, and he was stopped and given a producer, and itwas all fine.

You can only drive other cars third party on your insurance if they are NOT owned by you and must insured by someone else. Hence you can't insure a fiesta and then buy a 911 Turbo and drive that around third party.
But saying that, driving other cars isn't usually included on policies for under 25's.

what's the worst that can happen then if i wasnt insured. I thought I was fine cos my dads mate works in insurance and told me that so long as the other guy is insured on it, i should be fine, but i didnt check with my company. Its not like i was driving with no tax/MOT/insurance/license etc, i thought i was covered! (Not saying im not covered, but IF i wasnt)

I think you'll be ok mate. Officially you shouldnt really have driven the car, as you actually owned it, and the policy covers you for cars you dont own. Saying that though, the Logbook isnt in your name, so officially you dont own it . Its one of those dodgy grey areas that are overlooked i think. It'll be alright .

Written permission from the owner of the car means feck all.

You are only covered to drive it if your policy states you can drive any other car 3rd party. If it doesnt then you will be fecked for driving without insurance whether it is insured by the previous owner or not, unless of course he has any driver insurance.

yeah and a written note from the guy who owned the car befrore me saying i had his permission to drive it., I was gonna try and explain that i had fully comp, and his permission so was insured 3rd party on the astra, and hope they didnt ring my insurance and find out itdoesnt apply to under 25s. The woman at the desk was saying her son is into doing up cars and stuff aswell, i kept her talking and she didnt notice!
