Hi, just wondering what are the legal size requirements on numberplate size?

As i fancy new plates for my car and think smaller ones would look cool, but i want them to be legal

If i remember rightly you're allowed 11mm of plate around the edge of the standard text, this means that most of them can be cut down quite alot

If i remeber correctly, you need margins of 12mm all around, and make sure the spacings right. On my old car i never got pulled for the plates, and they were about 4" shorted than standard

so, whats the legal spacing requirements?

Also where can you get such plates made up?
(ie with the shamfer round the edge)

Or do you just get cut std ones yourself then file the edges smooth?

Theoretically yes. The font isn't legal and you shouldnt have ghosting on the plate. If they wanted to the police could tell you to get the lpate changed. Strangely though, you could easily legitimatly pass an MOT with that plate.

If you go to somewhere like www.fancyplates.co.uk or similar you should be able to get a plate made up with the standard font, but in a custom size. I got mine done by my dad to do mine . all he did was use the standard plate, and squash it all up using the measurments i gave him. then i just cut the excess either side off and filed the edges.

I never had a problem with those plates. It even passed its recent test with those plates on.
Previous MOT's I had done at the Vauxhall dealer and just stuck the original plates on with velcro for the test and took them off again before driving out.
I never had any problems from the police in the two years I had them on.
