Driving to work the engine management light come on and when in idle the revs are just going up and down and the tempature goes right up.
it's on the Gsi, anyone know what this sounds like?

i'd imagine it was a sensor. gona have 2 get the diagnostic guy out. £30 before he tells me whats wrong.

had same probelm on my 8v. Temp sensor was at fault. Car kept dying when stoped at traffic lights too.

my engine light has come on twice yet the engine is running perfect? 
so i turn the engine off and back on again and it goes out ? only done it twice im guessing its a connector. as for yours foz i think could be icv? or air flow meter possibly

So the rev counter was goin up and down from 1k revs to 2k revs? Funny how it only did it this morning.

my ICV went on the 1.0 but the tempature gauge was normal. I tryed turning it off and on but still the same.

Yeh in traffic quite allot this morning, happened after driving for about 3/4 of a hour.

Deffo gonna be a throttle position switch that, had the same on my sri sounds exactly as with mine.
Anyway get a diagnostics done to be sure.

Over heating - Thermostat or Thermostatic fan switch - Check if your fan is working. Dont let it over heat you will warp the head!
Lumpy Idle - Air flow/Mass meter or throttle position sensor. Both can be cleaned, but if its fucked its fucked
Both are common problems on GSi's.

Oh if your fan switch is fucked you can bridge it across with a piece of wire so you can use the car, its located at the bottom left of the radiator. Disconnect the battery, remove the plug to it, shove in a piece of wire looping the 2 contacts and hey presto, you got a fan.

Not to sure, It was one of the last things to go wrong with mine before I got shot of it I traded it in with a fucked TPS

Why don't garages have diagnostics Grrr. I don't fancy goin down vaux they don't tell you much. Always say more tests need doing which = £££'s

This is what i done, best thing to do... You can tell what it is by the amount of beeps !
