nice tutorial there. copied straight of the haynes manual
i was pissing around with the linkage for about an hour when i changed my gearbox. i then read the haynes and had it sorted in 5 mins
Aliba: i may be wrong but your problem sounds very like the linkage is not done properly

But my gearbox hasnt moved out of the car
Its just the same gearbox as before.
Havent disconnected the linkage or anything at all from it..... so it should still be aligned fine.
My thots are that the problem lies in the part of the gearbox which chooses the gear if you know what i mean....... the part where you either push the plunger in, or use a drill bit.
Think it may be seized or possibly knocked the reverse out of place etc.....
The gearstick does move into the reverse position... however it is still first gear
