Selling my car and want to keep my private number plate. I can't find a form on the V5 or anything, so do i just write to them, what have you people done in the past

hurry up cause can take upto 6 weeks m8....
mines took about 4 when i took it off last car.............
if you are not putting right on another car U need to put it on retention.£25 per year.....+£85 to take plate off(transfer fee)
think form is v705...

You need a V317 form. costs £80 for transfer to another vehicle, or a V778 and £105 if you want to retain the number for use later on (up to a year). I've had them through in less than 2 weeks onto retention, just depends how busy they are at your local DVLA office.
They usually re-assign the original plate (the one on the vehicle before it was changed to a private plate) back onto the vehicle, so don't ever throw away your plates when you get a personalised reg, 'cos its so much hastle to get plates made up these days. And you'd be sick when you realise the replacement number they assign you is the one you used to have a set of plates for, but haven't kept!
