Cant get the damned thing off my 2.0l 8v lump... do i need to remove the bottom pulley... if so how the hell do i do that coz i heard stories about the torque figure on the bolt in the centre of it!!!

yeah some times ya have to remove the bottom pulley and yes, getting the bottom pulley off can be a nightmare, from snapping drivers, to heating up the bolt with a blow tourch and 50% of the time grinding the bolt off!!!! ya might be lucky though

i have seen people hanging off a 6ft breaker bar trying to crack the bolt off with no luck, if ya get stuck ask on migweb these boys know all the tricks to doing this

Use a ring spanner, which is slightly smaller, hammer it on, and whack the end with a hammer. You usually end up with a bent spanner, but it comes off. You have to shock it cos you cant hold the crank - let along the engine from turning at these torque levels...

i got the correct socket had 2 extension bars had the car in gear and the brakes fully on handbrake fully on and i still moved the car!
it came off thou
id suggest getting the correct socket then heating it with a blowtorch
seriously every stuck bolt ive heated up has come free dead easy

what i did to open that bottom pully is put the car in gear and got the misus to stand on the brake
then uses me torque wrench in reverse. BUTTT the engine isnt in your car so ignore all of the above

yeah or wedge a socket on and long bar and turn the engine on the starter, but as said no help to you cos engine is out of car

Same here, except I realised the car would have no chance of moving if you put it in third or fifth gear

I fit's the same as the 20XE pulleys, then there is a large E20 in the centre and then six small star type ones on th eother bit, if you get the correct size for the star bolts (the size escapes me atm) and an impact driver then they come out very easily, the centre bolt is difficult to get out as it's 250nm then 60deg torque'd and cost £9 new from vaux which needs replacing when it's removed because it's a strech bolt. it's easier to leave that in, bit if you do want to lock the engine take one of the clutch bolts out and put it in the opposite side of the flywheel, That will take the torque as I've dont it many times retorque the bottom bolt, then just turn it back round. hope this helps.

So the big bolt can be left in??? also can my c14se lower pulley be used to drive the alternator or do i need the pulley from a cav/cally without power steering?

yes, leave the middle torx bolt.
should be 6 m8 splined bolts to hold the bottom pulley on.
i nearly made the same mistake last week.
you can hold the crank with a large torx socket on a breaker bar on the middle bolt, then should be able to undo the splined bolts (don't try to use torx bits for these) with a splned bit in a 1/2" ratchet.
you shouldn't use your torque wrench in reverse.
You should be able to use the pulley with just the alternator belt on it. just ignore the outer ring.

if it need to come off........grab your engine.....put it on the back of a pickup/in the back of a van etc....take it to a garage...and ask them to take a windy gun to it ...........they'll do it for free most probably..........and ya bolt will be off.......then to put it on.......buy a torque wrench ...and find correct torque setting for that specific nut

Im unsure if an airgun would do it though.
Although it might shock it into coming lose, but overall, airguns own.

true i had a alt that i need the bolt off and he airgunned it and it was off
is the gearbox attached? try selecting a gear and heating it then cracking it off
you need a new bolt to replace anyway
