engine was just idling then the ecu light comes on so i switch off, check a couple of things and try and start it again. Now it wont turn over, just makes a horrible clicking noise

mine did that twice, i think my starter motor is on its way out.
stick it into reverse, get one half of you out of the car and rock it, then try the ignition.
if you have mates around then try a push start

yep ^^ try that i h8 doing push starts thou it messes the lot up
was it idling fine before adam? so its running ok

its running on all 4 cylinders but its really noisy. can get a new starter motor from work at cost price

Starter motor would never throw an ecu light.
Clicking noise means not enough juice in the battery to turn it.
Ecu light might have been something to do with not enough voltage for some sensor or other.
