Just got me new car(95 i think, M-Reg, black 1.4) feels so much better than my old 1.2 red merit 5-door...

how do i tell if its 16v or 8v? it has a ecotech engine if that make any difference... havent picked up the car yet so can't check anything

Dont think the owner knows what it is

yep as he said plastic cover on engine with ecotec on it = 16v, no plastic cover = 8v thats easiest way to tell

You look to see if its a SOHC engine or a DOHC engine, if you can't tell the difference then there is no hope.

It sounds and feels so much better than the old 1.2 8v piece of crap i had...

i can tell the visual differnce between the sohc and dohc, one looks crap the other doesn't. So im guessin dohc=16v and sohc=8v?

Dont know much about cars, only know what i've learn't trying to fix parts that have exploded or dropped off

How the hell can you not tell the difference between 8v and 16v

If that the case get out of your car and walk, and let someone else have it.

8v has single cam.
12v has double cam.
16v has double cam.
My V6 has quad cam.

Nothing wrong with the 8v had one in me nova long time ago.

well I tried the bluepeter version, but ran out of washing up liquid bottles, so resorted to IKEA

instructions were printed upside down so I gave up
