Both to a degree.

Although a panel filter in a undrilled airbox wont make the slightest bit of difference to noise, it will allow an increased amount of airflow, hence helping performance.

Ok it will, but not noticably, with the original airbox feed on and no holes drilled you can barely hear the change in noise as its so tiny.

Panel filter in a standard airbox should not affect noise levels, but increase airflow.

If the engine makes more noise with incread airflow, then it will be noticeable after fitting a performance panel filter.

it wont make it noisier at all unless u forget to put the lid back on

any air filter change on a 1.2, weather it b a induction kit or panel wont make any noticable dif coz of size of engine!

It will increase air flow if the engine needs it but it will offer less filtration.

less filteration? i think not, so K&N with years or race tech behind them develope filters that filter less particles than standared paper, yeah rite!

Paper is the choice filtration medium by manufacturers for two reasons:

1) They're cheap to produce
B) They filter around 99.8% of airborne particles so to allow for the idiot owners that go for thousands of miles without changing the element at service intervals.

Performance filters using cotton-gauze, foam and stainless steel mesh filter less particles than paper.
That doesn't mean they let in harmful particles though - anything that gets past cotton-gauze (oiled) and foam (decent foam like Ramair, Pipercross, ITG) will be safely burnt up.

I forgot, K&N have bigger developement budgets than every single car manufacturer in the world....

Car companies are just too stupid to develope such a technically advanced air filter so they have to use the paper one that restricts the engine. So you, being such an asute engine expert can get an off the shelf 'performance' air filter for £30 that will be better than the paper one in every single way.

Don't forget that a cotton-gauze filter will clog easily twice as fast as it's foam equivalent so regular cleaning and re-oiling is needed, whereas a paper element will just be thrown away every 10k or so.

Get one (foam - Pipercross ) on the basis you'll never have to buy another panel filter.
Keep the yellow can that comes with the filter and every 20k or so, simply tap off the loose dirt, run the filter under the tap as per the cleaning instructions and dry. Re-apply a small amount of the yellow can and refit.
