Masters at Work where around at the beginning of it all.

There's a book call 'Adventures in Wonderland' by Sheryl Garrett which is sort of a journey through Dance and House music from it' orgins in the late 70's up until the late 90's

funky house is abit vague really there are loads of different kinds of house such as latin, tribal, filtered, electro.
The history of house is also different depending on who's view it is. If you go on some music sites such as subliminal and go on the message board im sure you will be able to find massive arguements about this which may help you in your essey.

Frankie Knuckles is regarded by many to be one of the pioneers of modern house music.

If you're after some modern funky house try some of the Hed Kandi CD's

cool mate where you studying mate? you doing traditional music, or is music tech kinda course?
im looking at doing music engineering at LIPA next year, but its abit on the pricey side (5k for tutuion fees a year, because its a private course)
sounds like a laugh mate eitherway, i wished my music tech a-level was about house music and stuff, that having to compose midi files on folk songs and doing live recordings of pieces of music i cant even say let alone spell
