Is there any way to backup the BIOS or is it just one of them things that has to be perfect every time?

When you run the flash util it will normally ask you if you want to back it up onto the floppy you booted from... usually a good plan

Has to be perfect really (but doesn't exactly go wrong unless you lose power to the machine in the 20 seconds it takes to update -- would be pretty bad luck)...

Most modern bios's have recovery programs anyway (which is why the backup on the floppy is a good plan)...

Nice one, I'm going to give it a go now... wish me luck or I'll not be back here for a while

Well, it said it was done, and it now has a different date for the BIOS so I'm guessing I did it! Cheers Tim.
