As above really, is there a way of telling if the head on a 2L is a coss cast or not from the outside??

take the exhaust manifold off and see if its printed between the holes ? :S

will have coscast stamped under one of the exhaust ports, or theres something on the side of the cylinder head.....

something to do with the water/oil galleries?...... coscast head is less likely to go poros... I think?

If its GM.... it will say GM on the right hand side of the block (when looking under the bonnet)

the difference is the way they were made. The Cosscast head was formed with cosworths superior moulding skills, in expensive moulds.... the GM one wasnt!

the "porous" story you so often hear relates to the fact that the GM head is more brittle, and is prone to cracking between cylinders 2 and 3... resulting in the oil and water galleries meeting

without taking the thing apart, the best way to tell is the way I described. To look down the right hand side of the block.

A cosscast head has this Z shape:
