below the fan and heater controls there is the air circulation knob. what is the difference between the two options? i've always been told to keep it to the left but why?

One side lets in new fresh air, the other recirculates the air.
You let in new fresh air if you smell, you recirculate the air if you want the inside of the car to warm up fast...

Also, I think the air recirc flap makes a whistling noise at about 70mph... Try moving it from side to side if it does until you find the optimum position...
The reason why you have probably been told to keep it in the left position is becuase it helps cool your car. Well apparently it does, but thats a load of shit. The heater matrix doesn't cool the car, the radiator does
