complete newb question i expect but just curious why are subs put in boxes when installed into a car?? what would be the difference if one was installed into a parcel shelf?

the shelf would vibrate with the speaker, and produce almost no bass, just vibrations.

And, unless you have a free-air sub, you need the box to create the air pressure to get decent bass.

well rather u need the air in the box creating high/ low pressure to stop the sub from over exerting itself..
if u run a sub free air then u need to keep the power down as it will move more easily. Subs will make plenty of bass free air (i used to do it myself) but its not reccomended.

ok thanks, just trying to think of ways of getting subs in a car but not use up all the room in the boot......any ideas??

focal 5" subs, although ive yet to hear some in real life, but imagine they sound the bollocks anyway. EVEN SMALLER boxes

tbh, i remember a corsa in france where a lass had a 15" free air sub installed into a custom parcel shelf that was hydralically controlled (lifted up to reveal amps below) and that was suppose to sound pretty good 
but ive never heard a free-air sub, so i cant tell you what they sound like, but im guessing they dont have the "boxiness" that boxed subs can suffer if put into the wrong size box etc etc
