If you're 20, then insurance will be a problem for you. So anything over groups 12-14 is going to be a real stinger.
How about an Astra 1.6 16v Sport.
With a bit of tinkering...the 'Sport' can look very nice. 1.6 is cheap insurance. Although not that quick, it'll feel like warp speed compared to the 1.0!!

JR, you'll be struggling to find any of those withint the £3k price bracket.
Ok, what type of cars would you limit yourself to then Ants? Would you go for anything French? Would you have a BMW E36?

Focus' are minging. RS is an exception to the rule as is a tidy ST170. I think they look horrible. A-symmetrical Dash is grim too. You'll also struggle to find a tidy one of these for £3k.
Ants....can't expect too much for £3k. E36 coupes still look nice if they have the facelift lights and a set of 18" Alpina wheels.
Thought about a Citroen ZX16v?? Please don't get confused with the 'Volcane' models. It's top spec and sits above it in the roster. I used to have one of these. Produce more power than an XE and will out handle lots of cars even as standard. I've owned lots of cars and it's been one of the best 'driver' action cars I've had to date. They are cheap now, so you'll save yourself some cash. Could look for a late one with airbag, leather and A/C.

Yeah, generally they are....but the 16v looks sweet.

Anyway, moving on. I personally would go for a CRX over a Civic. Civic's are ok, but I find them very bland.
CRX can be picked up for reasonable money. BUT insurance might be a problem.
