IMO the 1.8 sri is pretty poor and underpowered for a 1.8 only 123bhp.
Considering the 1.8 T golf is 150 bhp, VTS is only a 1.6 and it has virtually the same bhp 120bhp and is quicker another example is the Skoda
Octavia 1.8 180 bhp great car.

you say that though like it is crippled entirely from the onset. this is not the case. i have test driven the 1.8 SRi, and i feel that the engine is fantastic with this chassis. There are errors all over your argument. For example, the 1.8Turbo Golf is indeed a 1.8, but musters only 25bhp with its blown innards, and in mk4 variety, is a lardy little sod. The Saxo VTS is indeed more powerful and 200cc's down, but it makes far less torque than the SRi at any point in the rev range. you might want to keep that little word in your mind, since it is pretty important, just as important as peak power. The Skoda Octavia is also turbocharged, so holds no argument, it is also a saloon, so i dont really understand your point there.
The SRi was never meant to be the mean machine of the Corsa range. That was meant to be left down to the GSi, which never arrived, but whatever it would of been, whether 1.6 or 2.0, turbocharged or not, it would have been far quicker than the SRi. Its just a matter of waiting now to see what engine is put in the Corsa D GSi/VXR.
Overall, the SRi is a fantastic little car, well screwed together, good equipment levels and IMO, good price, especially the Barina SRi over here. It keeps winning many magazine awards month after month.
