Hi
I've decided to buy a second car to go to work/uni and back as the car parks I use are not very safe and I'm also putting quite a few miles on my car. I was thinking of spending up to £500. There seem to be a few astra's (mostly 1.4) in auto trader and was wondering what ppl thought of them. I know its not going to be a rocket ship but I mean more from a reliability/comfort point of view. And are there any out of the ordinary things I need to look out for when buying one?
Thanks

I had a K reg 1.4 SI for a run around before I found my Honda.
First thing to check is the rear arches,as these are prone to rust and corroding. If its a five door then open the doors and check there too where the arch meets the bottom.
My astra had SI seats so the bolsters had worn. Mine was still running fine at 136k miles as the engine was serviced at the right intervals.

problems with cutting out, runit up to temperature round the town to find out,
strut top mounts, rear springs & fronts, general wear such as brake pipes, astra f's or mk3's are high maintenance cars, they won't go thru 2mot's in a row at that age, just buy a wee corsa 1200, far better run about

I had an Astra 1.3 F plate (mk2) to run about in.
It had done 230,000 miles. Never let me down rain or shine.
job done.

This is SO TRUE!
I have spent nearly £2k on my Astra just fixing the bloody thing, I've only had it since November! This is my 3rd mk3 Astra - I don't think I will buy another one!
TBH as ShEp says a Corsa B is more reliable/cheaper to maintain. Buy a Corsa Merit 1.2 or something, you can pick them up for anything up to £1000 these days.
