gearbox whine, will start to notice it in 1st 2nd then it works its way thru all the gears

well i was going round a corner in third when i hear like a scraping noise and the car wouldnt pull for a second,dropped it into 4th and it was fine,have drove about 60 miles since and not heard it again only thing i could think is that i never put it in gear properly
