Who actually pays the extra for optimax fuel? Was probably a similiar thread a while back but times change. Worth it would you say?

You have to? Is there much of perfomance increase as claimed on top gear or fifth gear, whichever one did it?

I dont. Have put a few tanks in over the past couple of years but nothing regular. Seems to be a bit smoother to drive after its had a tank of it in. Probably do more harm than good in my car if I was to use it regularly

only performance gain is that fact that my car actually runs smoothly without pinking.... so yes its very worth while in my case

I'm the same as Broster. Optimax provides that little bit more octane so is in essence safer for a highly tuned engine.
I tried BP Ultimate a few times and then went back to Optimax and I honestly felt the car was more responsive with Optimax. I am very sceptical when it comes to this sort of thing, so there must be quite a difference between the fuels for me to notice the difference in pick up.

Is it only in highly tuned engine for example on TB's or with higher perfomance engines it is recommended?

Butler, it wont hurt normal engines, just that with tuned engines they generally need a higher octane rating to get the most from the engine, otherwise they may suffer from pinking like broster said.
I don't know the specifics, just that I've been advised to run on optimax.

You pretty much HAVE to run import cars on Optimax as the fuel in Japan is of a higher octane. I used to put Optimax in the Pug and it definatly ran a lot better It was a lot smoother

I got told its not a good idea putting Optimax in a car with an engine as small as mine. Cant remember what the reason was.
Pointless anyway

do it once in a while.
i always drive with little amount of petrol in my car, so when my dad drives it he gets pissed off and puts a full tank and usually puts in super or optimax! So i love it when he uses my car
I must admit tho, when i do fill up i do notice the smoothness, even straight away pulling out of the forecourt.

There seems to be a bit of a misconception over the use of different petrol.
The most important question is not whether or not to spend more on super unleaded, but whether to compromise and spend less on the low octane rubbish instead.
Super unleaded is only the best pump fuel available to us at the moment, and is not a patch on what proper 4 star was, never mind high octane 5 star petrol that was annoyingly phased out many moons ago.
To buy cheap petrol is a false economy as it promotes engine wear and makes a car less responsive, and less smooth and pleasant to drive.
Consequently you also use more.
After Shell 4 star was removed from sale I was forced to change to Shell Super unleaded which they gave a silly name a few years later.
I still use Optimax and an octane booster in my turbo charged car, but use the 99 RON Tesco fuel in my daily driver as it is the cheapest and highest rated Super unleaded you can buy at the moment, and as my car uses over 50 quid a week, by using the Tesco fuel I save enough money over a year to pay for my road tax.

It's the only petrol I've used for about the last 6 years - and I do mean the only one - EVER.
Hi Jim btw
