The sponsored results pay to get there, but Google is a free service so any results that arent sponsored have been found by Googles web crawlers

these days it takes alot more than just adding stuff to your site to get a good page ranking.

You used to beable to just use good meta tags and using those words in your page, but now you have to be linked to from high ranking sites, have the correct mix of meta tags and use of these words on your page, not too many images, etc. etc.

No, not true.

To get to top of Google, you'll want to submit your site to Dmoz the human edited directory.

Dmoz supply google all their information. The other websites get all their information as below:

[sorry, cant find it, i have it at work]

So the most obvious thing, is it go to these search engine, and register your site.

The next thing on the list to do, is decide on your keywords to use, and concentrate on just a handful (10 or so), and these to the HTML code.
Then you need to concentrate on link popularity, get as many links as possible.
You can do this by registering your website to as many free websites as possible that would link back to you. (look into this).

I too am new to SEO, so i decided to concentrate on 1 key phrase, 'control panel manufacturers'.
For this phrase, ive got 1st place in Yahoo , so it takes time to keep updating links etc.

Updating your content as often as possible often helps.

Search for SEO on the net to learn a load more.

*EDIT*
just found the chart:
http://www.omegadm.co.uk/relationship-chart.htm
as you can see, submitting to Dmoz is very crucial, as it will boost your ratings amonst many search engines.
It can take up to 6 months though!

You have got to becareful who you submit your link to though, as poorly ranked pages will reflect badly on your site, and well ranked pages the opposite. So its best to work on getting good quality links rather than loads and loads of poor links!

Google will also just not include you if they find out your doing anything dodgy to increase your rating.

It should be useful.
