Get 2.0 brakes off of an Astra, Cavalier or Calibra...
1.4 brakes will fit, but they aren't as good as the 2.0 ones as the disks aren't ventilated.
You could get V6 brakes, but they are heavy and shitty.

Do not get red dot disks....
There is not much point upgrading the brakes to 1.4. The only difference is the thickness of the disk.

the discs on my x14xe are vented, they do the job fine for a standard car. no point getting red dot when you can get GM discs and pads cheap now

1.4 16v brakes are shit. Its pointless upgrading to them. 2.0 16v are a much more worthwhile upgrade as Ed says.
You'd probably be able to get a decent standard 2.0 set up for less than a pair of red dot discs for a 1.4

thanks for crushing my sale guys
i disagree 2ltr brakes are good and v6 brakes are excellent but i was using my 1400 brakes with my xe for short time and was not as bad as peeps would have u believe it is so there
uprated versions of standard brakes are better anyway, and my red dot ones are vented and grooved

In my own experience I've found a set of larger O.E. discs and calipers to be better than standard size brakes uprated. Also alot cheaper and dont wear out as quick. Better for everyday driving

i also agree with red dot/ebc/black diamond standard sized brakes with weakening grooves being shit
i had ebc 1.4 16v brakes, and warped them in about 1200 miles
my v6 brakes have done about 6k now, and have hardly warn still, not problems with them at all
but... my standard 1.4 brakes were good enough, if anything, the drilled and grooved ones were worse
