a corsa van wont handle without spending...
You wont get a very new a4 for 2k

An old BMW 3 or 5 series 2.5 diesel.

and a corsa van towing a corsa on a trailor isnt very safe.

yup.... you need something with a bit of weight.... an estate fits the bill

Astra 1.7TD van/estate..... not the best weight....
Passat would be better....

passat has a stronger engine, is built better, will do upwards of 200k if looked after, and will be cheap as chips too

i hate auto
end of. im also narrow minded
i hate them, ive driven them, i keep goin for the clutch, i keep going for gears
i dont like not being in control of the car
i want 2nd for a corner and the fucker sits in third or drops to 1st
deffo not a auto
looking at the passat's not bad
audi a4 avant is very nice
bmw are horrible
ill have another look at vectra's as they are more value for money, cheaper to fix. i guess engine's are solid enuff if serviced

adam dont be so stupid, if you are towing, you should be aiming towards an auto!!! you will get used to it, and you can be in control if you adjust to the car. i drive an auto at the moment (not a very good one) and its so bloody easy to tell when its about to kickdown, and how much throttle to use to get it to change gear. and if you want 2nd gear immediately, then you just throw the auto into 2nd

Adam.... you can move an auto 2nd if you want
No auto will drop to first unless its fucked, or the driver is a goat and is tryign to get it to kick down.

You learn.... i kept trying to go for the clutch etc.... but it soon passes Driving an auto in town is much better too.... no stop starting in/out gears etc....

i'd have an auto if i was getting a big towing car

much easier, and you do get an immense amount of control when you learn to deal with the throttle control

I'd get a vectra hatch, can get a sri 2.5 v6 quite cheap now and the engine will last for ever if serviced, and cam belt changed.
ive never had any problems with handling in my vectra, get some decent rubber and lower it abit and you'll be suprised.
