Before you give your cars some stick, how much time do you give them to warm up, or do you redline it from cold every day like my neighbour?

My Dad tells me that his car will be fooked soon, but he's had a 1.2 8 valve Corsa, redlined from cold multiple times every day for 4 years, and now a 1.4 16 valve sport and he's had it for just over a year and no problems either.

I know on cars like Scoobies you have to warm them up, but on small engined cars is it not really a problem?

at the end of the day, yes it will reduce engine life, and ideally you should take it steady for the first ten miles till oils properly up to tem. in reality youre reducing potential life form 250k to 150k, who gives a fuck? my average journey is about 15 miles lol.

I always wait until my 1.2 is up to 90 degrees before I take it over 3 to 4 k as I really don't think much of the newer 16v Ecotec engines. They seem to be held together with Bluetac and paperclips. It seems to have a bit of a rumble when it's cold, which is not a good thing - reminds me of a very tiny V8.

when i had the 1.2 8v, i used to drive from my house on cold mornings bouncing off the rev limiter until it warmed up did that for 6 months and was still fine when i traded it in for a 1.6. i always drove carefully for 10minutes before even thinking about taking it above 3k.

8v engines are bomb proof though. I had my 1.2 8v, did like 20k in it over 3 years, never serviced it, ragged it e.t.c... and it was fine. They rock! They would probably run dry of oil. The 16v's though, they suck!

116k miles. My ex's car was on 114k before it got written off.
Always let the engine warm to near running temperature before giving it some stick.

I leave it for a few mins idling and then I don't take it over 3k until it hits the first minimum warmed up marker. After that, a bit of gas and it's at the half marker in no time

I dont drive my car over 3,000rpm until the oil is at at least 80 degrees. Oil wont protect the engine correctly until it is at working temp and generally it takes about twice as long to get to get the oil to working temp as it does your coolant. Takes me about 10 mins/ 5 miles before Im ready to play!

Granted it affects high performance cars a lot more than it does a 1.2 Corsa and as people have said Subaru's seem to be the ones where its needed the most - Not really for the turbo but mainly for the big end shells which seem to wear/fail quite frequently. Its all about the engines tolerances really - a 2.0 pushing 140bhp isnt going to under nearly as much stress as a 2.0 pushing well over 300bhp.

I dont take mine over 3k for the 1st 5-6 miles of a journey.

Feels really rough if you try to rev it any higher than that. Can definately feel the difference.

Good man! Same here.

I never drive mine whilst the choke is on, never take it above 2k unless its over 90oC.

U wouldnt belive the engine damage u cause by raggin it when its cold.
