I have a few photos of me and my brother/dad/mum that i would like blown up and changed to black and white

however, all i have the the 5 x 7 original photos, if i was to scan them in how big could it be without loosing the image quality?

Obviously scanning and enlarging will loose quality, but how big could it go untill it was noticeable?

Can you do that as distortion free as using a scanner?
