Whats involved in changing an ECU on a Corsa 1.4 16v (1996)?
Do I just get hold of a 2nd hand ECU and get it reprogrammed or can I get all the parts from a donor car so I dont need to reprogram it? If its the 2nd answer which parts would i need?
Cheers

i belive your car is a pre immob
so you need to find a pre immob ecu, then unplug your one and plug in the new one
have to tried changing the coil-pack?
also get your ecu out and find the number on it,
plus if it does have a immob i have a eco, chip, and transponder ring.
when you turn it over does the engine light flash fast?

to determine if its immob or not, is your key totally flat and square ish or rounded?

ECU doesn't flash when engines turning over..
Changed the Distributer? (black part the HT leads go into). Is that the Coil Pack?
ECU has the following onit:
16214239
Delco Electronics
GM JS
BWJN
096017
Keys rounded with a circle onit.. Sounds like theres something init when shuck (and no its not a bulb :-))

but as i have the loom aswellthat will rule out that aswell
can you get a pic of your key and also take off the plastic shroud round the ignition/steering coloum and see if there is a black ring round the ignition with a box under it and a wiring plug on it

Yep. Black ring and box with wiring loom are there.
Heres the key
Now removed (far to big a pic!)
Would this still look possible even though the guy managed to drive the car here? Over the last 6 weeks I have started the car but never actually been able to get it going (ie rev).. Just spluttered for a few seconds and cut out?
Cheers

is the exhaust black and sooty?
if its massivly over fueling that will cause it there are 2 coolent sensors on the thermostat if they go itll overfuel
also the ecu can cause it if its buggered
what sensors have you changed so far?

not black & sooty (but not really been started for 6 weeks so may have cleared with the weather). Guy who dropped it off reckoned it went through £10 of fuel on the 20 mile trip but he was revving it to hell... This is the problem with the car.. Could end up throwing another £200 onit and not get anywhere. Wish I'd bought the wife a newer sport now rather then a polo. Could have at least swapped parts over then to test. :-)

oh almost forgot..
So far changed the Fuel Pumper, Filter & relay. The Distributer, Camshaft & crank sensor. Throttle body with sensors. HT leads & plugs.

so really it can only be the ecu and loom, or the 2 sensors on the thermostat cover

Where abouts are the 2 sensors and the thermostat? (just checked the Haynes manual but as its wrote for the X16XE its not the greatest help!) If I unplugged them would it make any difference to try to eliminate them before looking at the ECU?

it may help umplugging them
as you look at the engine from the front the left radiator hose "s shape" goes into the engine
thats the themostat there are 2 sensors there
1 has 1 wire and i think it controls the dash
the other is like an auto choke "i think" has a blue plug on it or part of it and has 2 wires
