Crank sensor and cam sensors knackered, car in limp mode and banging noise coming from inside engine when car is running...
Been to Vauxhall today who quoted me £180 to strip and check timing, a further £180 to replace crank sensor and a further £110 to replace cam sensors. So i was looking at £500 bill and they couldnt guarantee a fix.
Crank sensor on order and cam sensors getting ordered tomorrow but i can't see the sensors curing the banging noise. Something must be knackered inside of there...
Going to get sensors fitted by backstreet garage because Vauxhall were quoting me for 3 hours labour to fit them but i've been told its a half hour job for each of them.
I'm now looking for a £50 banger with a couple months MOT to drive around in incase the Vectra needs a rebuild (looking very likely)..

which engine is in the vectra? if its the xev then there is a modified camshaft sensor that will be needed. used to fit alot of these to the omegas when i worked at vauxhall.
as for the knocking, the new sensors might sort it as if the ecu is getting the wrong timing signals then it could be telling the ecu the timing is different to what it actually is

gutted for your m8, lets hope its the sensors. Other than that there must be loads of those blocks kicking around cheap.

There's loads kicking around but still looking at couple of hundred quid to buy one and no guarantee that it's not in a worse state than mine, but the labour costs involved to rebuild the things is not so cheap..

did you drive it anywhere with the knocking noise coming from the engine?
if it comes to the worst then use it as an excuse to put a 3.0 in there!

Drove it home from work on Monday night, to the garage on Tuesday morning and back home from the garage on Tuesday afternoon.
Whilst it was in the garage the Vauxhall monkey was revving the tits off it which probably didn't help it. I was sitting in the waiting room watching him and i assumed he must've fixed it to be doing that but turned out he had done fuck all with it other than Tech2 it and rev it...
C20LETS and 3.0's aren't cheap. I have NO money...

Changed crank sensor and cam sensor myself.. Saved me £190 in labour charges at Vauxhall.
But fault still present..
Had car to mates garage this morning and he thinks i might have had a faulty timing belt kit fitted as one of the tensioners/rollers is making a slightly whirring noise (i can't really tell but he knows what he's listening for). He think this might've caused my timing to jump a tooth and knock my cams out of sync (or something like that )..
Another mate has been to have a listen to it and he thinks i've got a knackered valve in cylinder 5 or 6 and he agrees that the tensioner/roller is too noisey. He's going to strip the timing covers off on Tuesday to see if the timing has jumped a tooth and caused the knackered valve before i take it into garage on Wednesday where it will be left until the full extent of the damage is assessed.
Either way it's definately needing a head rebuild.

You can usually jump a tooth or 2 and not break valves. However, if it is a bent valve then it sounds like a much bigger job than it actually is. I had all 16 valves out of my 2.0, cleaned then back in again in just over half a day.
If you only need to replace 12 as only one head is faulty, or maybe even just the faulty ones then don't worry about it. Could even DIY it!

diy it lol
ou cant really compare the v6 to the 2.0. Would take longer to get all the inlet crap of a v6 than to getthe head of the 2.0.
Im betting its a little end gone rather than a valve!

It's the same principle though. Of course it will take longer to dismantle the engine because there are more things to do but it's no more difficult.

Prior to last week i'd never even touched an engine before never mind stripped and rebuilt one...
I am keen to learn how to dismantle them/rebuild them, but i can't really do it on mine as i desperately need it (or a replacement) back on the road..
