You would hardly see any diving to get free kicks/penalties, also most players don't play if they've got a little strain, in the good old days, people used to play with broken bones and get hacked to death but just get up and get on with it.

Phil Macavenny(sp) played with a broken toe for Liverpool IIRC, Pele used to get snapped, get back up and dribble it past whoever chopped him.

Bert Trautmann broke his neck and still played for 15 mins in goal and made some good saves in an FA cup final

and a few players played well under the influence of alcohol
I remember watching Bobby Robson being interviewed by Parkinson:
Parkinson: So what was the atmosphere like in 1990 in the hotel
Robson: It was fantastic but Gazza spoilt it running around the hotel with a brandy and fag at 4am
those were the days

I agree, the game is too poofy now. I was playing against Brackley Town last season and was elbowed kindly in the head by Mike Ford (ex Cardiff/Oxford player) and had to go off to have the cut sorted out as it was bleeding everywhere Ref decided I couldn't come back on thus had to be subbed because my shirt had some blood on it + we didn't have a spare
