I don't think downloading of copyrighted material is 100% legal, but I don't think it's as illegal as sharing - if that makes any sense?

The companys that produce software aren't really doing much to stop it though. It can't be much of a problem. I mean, my copy of Windows knows it's illegitimate, yet it still works. All it does is tell me it needs a new serial number, like I'm going to bother with that.

downloading and sharing are 2 different things. Some company allow downloads of their products as trial and then you can buy, it all depends on what you are downloading

I think its technically legal to download so long as you have the original, you are allowed a copy of it. However sharing it is illegal, and im guessing you dont have the originals as there wouldnt be that much point in downloading them

you buy the right to listen to the music, not to copy the cd

actually with most hard mediums, tapes, records, video tapes, cds, dvds etc you are allowed a backup copy which can be used instead of the product but cannot be sold or lent out etc
the same with digital music purchased from a website.. you are allowed a certain amount of copies.. on napster this is 3 per track
altho thats correct you do buy the right to listen to it rather than own it..
oh and to answer the question.. you cannot define whether sharing and downloading are illegal or not as both can or cant be depending on what the licence you have (be it paid for or under terms of use) states, combined with your intended use..
for example i can dl a copy of Photoshop with the intention of buying the licence key which would be legal
or i could dl it with the intention of cracking it and selling it which is agaisnt the licence and therefore illegal
of course alot of this is also open to interpretation due to digital music and filesharing being 'new technology' so whether or not alot of this is enforced is another matter

nope, with music, if you own the cd, you can download the songs, its dvd's where your buying the license to watch it, and therefor its ilegal to make a copy or download it.
basicly, if your supposed to pay for it, you cant legally download it
