You want to be using a MIG welder. A gas one at that, don't waste your time with the gasless variety, they just aren't powerful enough and you wont get as much penetration.

Manual Metal Arc (Stick Welders) aren't suited to thin steel like car panels/chassis and you will find that it will just burn holes. They are better for thicker steel.

the cross member is pretty thick im sure the stick would not burn a hole in it. but would the welds be strong enough?

Stick welder would produce welds strong enough but using mig would be so much quicker.

Gas ideally wants tobe set at around 1.2bar. You might have 2 dials, one for course settings and one for fine settings. Its all trial and error with mig settings so put the course to a fairly low level to begin with and put the fine to a similar setting. Practice on a piece of scrap metal first and then adjust one dial at a time accordingly until you have a setting you are comfortable with. Everyone welds at differant settings so its hard to give a good setting, especially as no two welding sets are the same. Some sets do give an amp setting though, aim for 110amps to begin with and see how you get on.

Hope that helps!

if you can gass weld you have some real talent. mig welder is realy easy to use. you set the gas pressure and set the amps and wire speed. if its buring holes in it you turn the amps down and if its slittering and sounds like its spitting. you have your wire speed to fast. youl know when you have it rite. beacuse youll be getting a nice weld.
