My mate had some head work done on his car and he got it back a day from the garage and he was driving along and suddenly the car reved right up then cut out and wouldnt start again.
Took it back to the garage who about a month later have decieded it was a frayed throttle cable that caused it and now all 16 valves are bent and that its not thier fault and he needs to pay for the repair work.
could a frayed throttle cable do this???
im no expert but i thought not

revved right up and all 16 valves bent? how did that happen?
excessive revs, weak cambelt = snap = bent valves?

if the throttle cable was frayed, it may have caught on a bracket, and stuck, sticking the throttle open.
but, they should have told him when the work was being done, as they would have had to disconnect the cable to get the head off.
it'd be difficult to prove that it was like it before, but it would also be difficult to prove that the garage did it...

Frayed cable would'nt cause the valves to bend, will probably have caused the revving as it might have been sticking. Did the cambelt snap? Thats the only thing that would realy cause all the valves to bend.

just read it again... if he hadnt got his foot on the floor, there is no way it would gain revs really
strange

Also if he had just had head work done, was the engine timed up correctly, did they not tighten a tensioner/roller bolt or something? Valves just dont bend unless something is seriously wrong, not just a throttle cable.

the story is feasible but unlikely. Hard to prove either way!

think that doing what you said with taking another mechanic up to see the car would be a good idea as you said kerry. and im not completely sure but i have not heard in my experience of these cars that a cam belt has ever snapped on one of the 16v engines, it has always been the tensioners or water pump failing that i have heard of myself, but im sure cambelts have snapped on thier own or due to the tensioner/ pump, so it is highly likely that one of the bolts was not tightened up properly or similar. the throttle cable could be a coincidence too, if they have been forcing things about in the engine bay it could have just left it ready to break.
