a brand new WRX STi is going to be ALOT more reliable than a 15 year old grey import shed...
you going to have to be more specific on which model you are talking about as there are quite a few

they are realiable by as much as 7 and a halve

Stick with a standard UK car and you wont have a problem!!

I have a Jap WRX, it gets the tits ragged out of it TBH and I only ever suffer with the petrol consumption. These cars are designed to take a beating, it's not like a VTR that'll turn into a tractor after a couple of months of abuse.
Only prob I had with mine that put the car out of action was a split coolant pipe, which was fixed 50pence later
All this bollocks about them being unreliable is as i just said....bollocks!
Keep oil/coolant in them and you won't go wrong mechanically, unless you fuck about with the boost, etc but you're entering "pop territory" with any car if you do that.

Uk turbo here, Don't know what the comment about below 6k is all about. I launch mine at 6k and when on the open road i change up at 6k.
The only thing to worry about is MAF sensor failure which is pretty common. There can be a problem with the ECU on MY00 cars too and some people have replaced them for MY99 ones as its felt its a better map.
Strict servicing wether its a standard uk car or a modified import (wrx) You can't expect to drive a 220bhp+ car around without any problems if you aren't going to keep everything checked.
You'll find most horror storys are with 400bhp+ cars that have being pushed too far without being upgraded.

On the subject of Impreza's is there a list anywhere that states the BHP of every model? they seem to vary so much on model and year. I'm currently around and getting confused!

Tis a problem!!!!
There are a fair few on the owners club that have gone bang! They definitely need more care and attention than a lot of the other models!
