Me and Rob took my valves out the misfiring cylinder tonight. It was ever so slightly bent, not really visible unless you held it against a new one. Could this be the reason my car is misfiring, it still slid out pretty easy.

Its looked fine to the naked eye, its only when we stood the old one and a brand new one up infront of each other you could see the old one was bent, but it was only by a couple of millimetres if that. So I cant see it being a problem.
My car was misfiring and when the head came off it looked sooty as if it hadnt fired at all. Also there was a bit too much water in the rocker even after the gasket change. The head doesnt look cracked at all.
Got to check the liner. Still think its the valve?

yea most probably as u done a compression test and had hardly anything didnt u. so obvioulsy bent enougth to cause that and not enought compression to fire as there was only about 15psi wasnt there

Compression test read 1 bar on that cylinder, the others were all 11. I hope your right, I really do!

1 bar is around 14psi which im sure would not be enough to fire that cylinder

What is it that causes the compression? The piston? Could be the liner? Or piston ring? There was water in the 4th chamber which seems to have seeped through since i last looked a few days ago.

the piston coming up causes comp. but if the valve is bent it lets the comp out.it could be rings which cause low comp but the water wouldnt come thru the rings obviously as theres no water down there

What is the block liner and how do i check if this is cracked? Prob a silly question but something else someone suggested.
Its a nightmare situation, if this doesnt fix it its going to have to be a new head and strip and change all the parts on it which is more money on hassle. Either that or risk it and get my head crack tested and/or skimmed.

So the water that was in the cyliner that was misfiring is now gone?

Yes. I think water got in there when we took the head out like it tipped in. But its gone now like it seeped through.

fill the pistons up with water and see if they leak thru, they shouldnt do.

yes they will, the rings have gaps, the water will disappear after a while.
James, the valve is the problem, if its bent, it wouldnt seal, so you would have no compression, meaning it wouldnt fire.
get a new valve in there, skim the head, and it'll probably be fine

i told him this... tbh he's like a big woman.... he worries more than my girlfriend!
ps... liner looks fine and i cant see any cracks in the head.
Ive replaced the valve that was bent and we are gonna put the head back on either tonight or tommorow... so fingers crossed it'll be done by weekend

you havent skimmed the head as a matter of course
I'd do it as a precaution on an engine that i'd cooked... looking fine or not

you've put it all back together, and there's no compression still?
did you use a new headgasket again? or the same one?

same one its only in the 4th cylinder everytime though. its like despite the fact we put a new gasket on its still has the same problem as it did before the head came off the first time

No but rob is adamant that wouldnt just affect the 4th cylinder like this.

Doing half a job will always fuck you up...
Youve had the head of twice now and never skimmed it, even if that isnt the problem your just asking for problems..
If you had rebuilt it properly the first time you would be able to rule out most things.
Now your just having to guesss what it could or could be, my guess is probably a cracked ring or liner..

Its not gonna be a cracked liner because these engines have a wet liner.
If it was cracked then the cooling system would be over pressurising which it isnt.

TBH James i think you should listen to people on here, get the head taken off again, get the head sent away to be skimmed, get it back and put it on and then we can carry on trying to solve the problem.
The reason i offered to help was so you didnt have to take it to a garage and get charged stupid money to fix summit that isnt overly difficult.

get the head off, check ALL the valves, grind them all back in, and replace any which look suspect, then get it skimmed and bang a new gasket in, and some new plugs and cross your fingers.
