recently had some new wheels fitted to my corsa b! they were absolutely fine, no problems at all! however i had a new handbrake cable fitted the other day and since then iv noticed an enoying sound come from the rear of the car! basically when i get up between 40 to 60mph i can hear a sort of humming sound at the back, it gets louder as you speed up! could one of my rear wheels be rubbing slightly on something which could explain this kind of droning whinig sound?

Sounds like a wheel bearing mate. Jack the rear up and spin the wheels, you will hear it rumbling as it spins.

If its noisy it needs replacing mate. Wont be too costly as the part is'nt much and it is'nt too time consuming.

Thats providing it is a wheel bearing anyway, seems like it is from what you have said.

just taken it to the garage and they said there is no play in either wheel and that its most likley to be one of the shoes pressing slightly on the drums or something like that! how can i sort this!

There should be a slight bit of play in the rear wheels, if the garage has tightened the rear hub nuts up too tight this is why they will be noisy.

i can remember seeing him having trouble putting the drum back on after he had fitted my new handbrake cable, the rear right drum went straight on and turned freely! however when he put on the rear left one he had difficulty, he couldn't get it on, he ended up wacking it on with a hammer, then when he tried turning it it didnt turn as freely, i think this is my noise problem, what could it be?

Sounds like the shoes on the left need adjusting. The drum should have gone on ok without him having to hit it with a hammer! If he had to hit it then it will most likely be binding which isn't good. Take it back and get them adjust that side. Should only take 10 mins. (If they can get the drum back off!)

Take it to the garage, there is a problem they should fix it. If you want to do a bit of self diagnosis jack up the rear end, spin the wheels. If they don't spin freely the brakes are binding, if they do spin freely but its noisy the bearing is knackered.

Obviously no-one on here will know unless we see/hear the problem so if your not confident of doing it yourself, take it to the garage and let them sort it.
