I drove to York about a year ago to have the cage done, think I saw signs for Edinburgh from there and that was 4 hours drive.

M40 > M42 > M6 > etc. so mostly motorway, get some good speed on M6 Toll and M6 in Cumbria though IIRC.

That would be a decent route if it's the shortest. Going up the other side M1 -> A1 have to watch out for speed cameras and unmarked cars north of Newcastle. Saw one person stopped by an undercover Focus a few weeks ago but can get some decent speed along there if it's quiet.

MultiMap in my experience is utter rubbish. I was trying to go somewhere Northern (cant remember where) and it told me to go via the Isle of Wight!!!

I always use the AA travel planner now which says for Reading to Edinburgh:

391.2 Miles 6hr 56 mins

Also tells you where Cameras are etc

Is that M25 > M1 > A1 ?

Nope:

A329>A4155>A4074>A423>A34>M40>M6 Toll>M6>A74>A702>A700>A8

Seems pretty easy route looking at it though. Takes you from centre of Reading to centre of Edinburgh. Have used AA loads and its always 100% accurate - even timings.
