Ok, i need to make a desision on what to do with the golf.
Ive carried out a compression test & cyl 3&4 are out...well basically they read 1psi (atmos pressure?) 
So ive got a big fault somewhere.
My options are as follows:
1. Put it into a garage to get fixed (Been quoted £400 if its a simple headgasket job, which im not sure if it is). Ive not got a huge amount of confidance in my mechanical ability & Id know it would be getting done right at least.
2. Whip the head off myself & rebuild top end - I'll need to do a crash course on the haynes manual & possibly buy some new tools up to the job.
3. Buy my mates golf (same engine...less miles) for £100 & switch the engines. His needs a clutch fitted, i'll also be able to sell off bits of the car to pay for the job & keep some spares for myself. Is changing an engine over really as easy as some of you guys make it look???
What does the public think??

if you can have both cars side by side, getting the engines swapped is piss easy, and you can keep loads of spares from the donor golf too.

I cant keep 2 golf at my parents thats the problem 
There going mad with one sat up the drive as it is
So id need to take one or both round to my house to get buchered.
Ill need to fit a clutch & probably new timing belt to the donor engine....how easy is this??

clutch is easy, as you'll have the engine/box out anyway, so its just a matter of unbolting the engine from the box, and unbolting the clutch, and putting them together again. cambelt is easy if you can get a mate to help, just to be sure its on in the right place.

Shells got a bit of damage.......
I could move on interior & doors/bonnet/tailgate, whatever else I find to pay for the conversion.
Does the council still do a free uplift on scrap cars?? To get rid of the shell??

I paid £160 for mine, it worked out cheaper than hiring one for a week or 2, then you can sell it on for £100 or so, making it even better value for money.
then its just all about spanners and stuff...

yeah, go for it.
I did mine in about 4 days, in the freezing cold, with brosters help, and neither of us really had any major mechanical knowledge back then, we sort of dived in and got on with it.

people on the internet make stuff sound easy, but when it comes down to it and there are fucked bolts all over the place that need destroying to get out and its freezing cold outside etc, things are never easy!
