Saw a Thurlby Astra 888 in the metal for 1st time the other day.

Was a silver one. They look alot nicer than they look in any pics I have seen. Sit nice and low, styling pack and wheels look spot on and the brakes are huge!

Was pretty cool

I can imagine the majority of owners begin to love the car, then soon wishing they bought a VXR..

and any time that happens they could get a remap and sit and look at their mpg which would probably quell such feelings.

Whys that then?

Its got loads of torque to make light work of overtaking, is hardly any slower than the VXR on paper, looks the part, is rare and will still 40+ MPG.

Not likely.

The 888 may be 40bhp down, but it has 330ft torque - something the VXR can only dream about.

Maybe, but on track, the 888's couldn't keep near a standard VXR... Don't forget, its only 100lb ft down, and against a derv, thats good.

And remap a VXR like that 888 has been done, and the 888 looses out BIG time.... (I lost around 15 car lengths on a Stage 2 (Exhaust and remap) VXR just on Revitt straight at Snetterton alone!!!!). It'll be up in the 300lb ft region... Not much off what is basically a stage 2 1.9 CDti engine, just from the factory.

The only thing the 888 has thats much better than the VXR is the 4 pot brakes, and and the fuel economy... It lacks the seats, the nifty little touches that makes the VXR different from the rest of the range.

Personnally, buying a car like a VXR, if your worried about fuel, then go buy a 1.2/1.4 or a diesel...

ITs a bit like saying... "i can't buy that car because of the insurance" Feck that, if i want that car, no insurance company and poncy bit of paper will stop me getting it.....

888 IS a good car, but its no VXR. And it smokes more than a pothead as well..... Nice....

You've obviously been through the decision process at one stage and thought it all through so fair play to you!

If i was offered either just now i'd go for a white 888 simply because it looks the dogs bollox the wheels and brakes are and for the sake of a small difference 0-60 id rather have 40mpg

I agree with that. I'd guess on the road where it matters for most people you wouldn't be able to tell the difference in performance.

Also to buy the VXR in the first place is more than the 888. And there are alot more than 100 of them on the road.

Hammer, yeah, LOTs of thought

The Brake upgrade for the VXR is £1600. Same stuff. Also you can get the suspension (and better).

But eh 888 is more exclusive. But its kit is basically a VXR sideskits, and a lower lipped front bumper.. Styling choices will change from person to person so neither is really better looking than the other. I personnally love the VXR styling though. It looks SO much meaner in the rear mirror

But can't knock 40mpg either. (VXR roughly between 25-30, but now our engines wearing in our fuel rate has gone up by nearly 50 miles to the tank!!!! )
