We were using the word chav back in 1998, but not to describe people who hung around down the shops but to describe proper gypos who live in caravans.

I always wondered where the term 'chav' came from. I personally think it was invented by some middle class numpty as a way of being derogatory to working class people.
Although now it does fit perfectly for some people.

we used to call chavs pykies, same shit different name.

I for one am glad its used alot, as people are hopefully noticing they are being called chavs and mending their ways
