tomtom one v2....easy to use, picks up very quickly, easy to add POI and speed cams.
tomtom all the way

i have a garmi C310. No problems with it. POI are easy, speed camera database etc etc etc

I have a Tom Tom Go 910 and its excellent!
Haven't used any other brands so cant really compare.

i have a tomtom one excellent bit of kit.
we use the garmins at work and i personally don't like them although they are good units.
It's down to personal taste imo.
I have a tomtom one v1 forsale if your interested.

I also work for Halfords, and at the moment would say its a very hard choice.
It all depends on what you want from the unit, would you like download speed camera information, and have real-time traffic available on screen?

Have had experiences of following mates with cheaper end of the Tom Tom range and not been impressed. They get lost easily and take un necessarily long routes to places which could have been quicker if you;d used logic and followed sign posts 
Best one I've used was actually a navman - didn't fail me until it got right into Central London.

personell experience of both
tom tom has more info on the display,
garmin from halfords c510d come with speed cameras europe and free traffic info
both are easy to use
tom tom 1 is ace and slim garmin is c510d is a bit bulkyer
garmin 310d is slimmer and has bluetooth to use as a hands free kit
tomtom 510 to 910 have a problem with thier mounts "early ones" as far as im aware this has been rectifyed
so ask yourself do you need it for uk only,
and do you want the speed cameras and traffic in with the price, or do you want to pay extra for it?

its slow and unpredictable in comparison to both tomtom and garmin
and i mean the r-a 6000 i havent used the 7000 yet, but as far as i know the 7000 is waterproof which in my book is asking for trouble

well most things are shower proof these days, just so you can use it out walking or on a bike, I cant imagine it makes a difference
