Anyone know any good UK site that show you how to write a top notch directed CV???

Ive got an existing one, but ive done a few varied jobs not all directed at a spacific career, some good bits in it but some of it comes accross a bit vague. I need it to be able to snap necks when hopefull employers read it & make them want to take me home for sunday lunch never mind offer the job!!

Any tips from you guys???

Also do you give reasons for leaving jobs when doing your work history, is it good practice to say you left a company because you didnt see it going in the direction you wanted so left to persue something else

What about any short times unemployed, only for a couple weeks on 2 occasions, do you mention this or cover it up with job start/stop dates???

Thats what worries me, some may view the technical parts of my job as flannel & dismiss reading it

I could slim it down, chop most of the technical terms out & just put like, various hydrocarbon analysis & wet chemistry techniques

I dont know

The job im applying for is a Electrical/instrumentation engineer.

Reason for leaving:

"lack of internal opportunities"
"keen to develop career and skills"

Make sure you research the firm your sending your CV to and analyse there promotion policies, training etc.

e.g. I was excited to learn about the fantastic training your firm gives to new starts and was encouraged by your career ladder....blah blah

Plus pick out career highlights/achievements and put them at the top wit ha mission. e.g. develop career, learn this, do that.

if you've worked with any clients stick them down too.

You could always be more brief and leave out the technical jargon from your duties but have more information to give them if they're really interested??

Alot of it is abbreviated terms, else my CV would be 8 pages long

eg. 3CDU = No3 Crude Distillation unit, MCRT = Micro Carbon Residue test etc

Not sure what to do here.

Col, I've never ever put down my reason for leaving on my CV. If they ask, just explain then. I've been asked why I want to leave my current job and I just flannel it with the "take on new challenges" stuff. Never been asked why I've left old places. Don't mention it unless they do.

Totally mate, I've never ever done it and to be honest, I've never see it on anyones I've employed either. If I think I need to ask then I do. Usually just current job I ask about unless I see any really short dates of employment.

I've been fortunate enough to get almost every job I've applied for, keep the CV short and to the point. Try to bullet point it a bit more instead of lots of text.

Sample from mine:-

• Developing reports and reporting procedures to enhance the company’s profitability
• Design, scheduling and preparation of weekly and monthly management reports using Cognos Planning and Microsoft Excel
• Maintenance of Cognos reports, data warehouse and web applications
• Design and maintenance of Sage reports, nominal ledger and users profiles
• Assisting in the production and delivery of training for new IT systems and reports
• Design and build of adhoc reports
• Identification and elimination of unutilised / unproductive reports and procedures
• Planning and execution of projects

If they want to know more, they'll ask. People shit it with interviews but the way I look at it is that it is 2 sided. I want to know what I'm getting too.

I once turned up at an open day for interviews for a job that didn't exist. Gave me a 3 hour interview - 3 different people, 3 tests (written, mathmatical and Excel). Must have impressed them cause they invented a job to suit what I did and offered me it.
