got a 350d. currently with only the standard lens 18/55mm one.
would just like a lens that has better zoom and possibly suitable for some macro shots. my dad uses it for taking bird pic etc so a decent high quality zoom would b great!
can anyone assist...budget is probs £300 max!!

a lens that has a good zoom range will not be any use for macro.

Why do you say that? not necessary, lots of zooms have macro functions, obviously not as good as a dedicated macro but still.

If your not going to go for one made by the camera manufacturer then good ones to go for are Tamron and Sigma (the Tamron Simon posted is a good one) although i was shooting with a Tamron 70-200 and i was impressed, that one also has a Macro function.
Both makes should fit into your budget pretty well

Might get a used 100mm f2.8 for that which is telephoto but not zoom.
Telephoto means it sees far.
Zoom means it changes distance. Your current lens is zoom because it changes from 18 to 55mm, but its not telephoto.
If you can live without macro but just want range then check out the 75-300mm f4.0/5.6
