Prices of components are dropping quite a bit now.

If you know the right people, you can make a fair bit of moolar.

All of the above would cost someone around £550 if bought from me. (Costs me around £460-£470 in parts and XP).

What do people think?

like you say, its very cheap everywhere.

I could supply the following for less than £550:

There is no OS with that, but if you wanted a OS i could just tone down the spec slightly to shave off £50.

It's a case of finding the market though as most people would rather spend #500 with Dell/PC World.

but to be honest it is feasable. People around my area are fed up with shitty 2nd rate parts from PCworld etc and i often have private jobs on at the weekend.

Exactly.

And the people that you sell the machines to will always come back.

For example they will instantly look at lots of porn, then call you because of spyware and viruses. Another £20-£30 straight away

I was thinking this when I bought my PC. All the bits and software I bought was OEM gear and it didn't come to a lot of cash. The only issue is screens because you don't really get OEM screens do you and some people might want an entirely brand new system so it might cut your profit slightly.

I wouldn't say Dell was "2nd rate".

Every machine in my company is Dell, my home computers are Dell, my Parents computers are Dell. Fuckin ace machine and cheapest bang for buck.

I rate Dell. I've had two, both have been really reliable machines. I still have the screens from one of them and still use them. They are probably the best screens I have ever used.

Dell are the best out of all the PC manufacturers IMO, great server solutions too. stable as hell, and trust me, we give them hell at work and they never ever fail

Only bad thing I have to say about Dell is the GX260/280 blunder with bulging capacitors.

Fair enough they replace the mobo's when they go even if they are out of warranty... but they should have done a recall IMO

I've got a lot of Dell stuff here and its OK. In work thats all we use and its far better than the IBM stuff we replaced with it. The only problem I've seen a few instances of is overheating normally due to fan failure.

I stopped building PCs years ago as there was no money in it and I'm sure the margins still are not huge. Or maybe I hate dealing with people who phone you up all the time over nothing when you made about £50 from three years ago. Its not easy.

The most ridiculous thing is that if you go into pretty much any big company and their stuff is always Dell!!!!!

YET Dell are only the 3rd largest supplier in Europe behind HP and Acer... very strange IMO

Personally I would never buy owt but dell... Always had a Dell at work... GX260, GX270, GX620 and now a D620 and have a Dimension 3300 at home and got my parents a 5100... never had a problem! Their monitors are great as well

i can build a PC including OS in a couple of hours, i charge £80 for full build and install so thats £40 an hour. Plus i enjoy doing it. TBH dell arnt the best for home systems, upgrading is a nightmare and some parts are quite cheap.

I insist when i build my systems that i uses the likes of Asus, Abit, Decent memory etc. I am now getting a fair bit of setting up home networks, wireless etc which i charge a fixed rate of £30

if you supply a good service, speak the truth and enjoy it i'd go for it.

I just recommend dell now.

The blown caps are a massive known issue but how can they just recall all the systems?

Do you know how much that would cost dell?

The way they do it at the moment costs them absolutely nothing.

It was the suppliers fault and it's all passed onto them.

You also get rather good support with dell, especially the business warranties.
