i using inventor to produce the shapes etc for a model im making,
put it then in 3ds and set the materials etc but the renders are coming out sooo pixelated along straight or diagonal lines?
never used to do this but now it is, what am i doign wrong or what settings to change

are you using the default scaline renderer? if so, bring up the rdner window, click on the tab labelled renderer, make sure anti aliasing is turned on and try changing the filter type to sharp quadratic

oh and turn on global supersampling, either on the scene in the render tab or on the material in material editor.

nice one mate i hope this comes out bit better!!!
any tips on how to get light to the bottom of an object say a sofa so you see the detail in the legs without a shodow?

you can add lights (spotlights, omni's etc) from the toolbox on the right hand side.
But google "3d max lighting", plenty of tutorials around to help
