...luckily got it booked in for Wednesday though hopefully it'll fly through. On the last service 6.5-7k miles ago the rear dampers were leaking slightly but weren't worth replacing. If it fails on anything, it'll hopefully be that.

If it does fail, what is the 'probation' period? i.e. being able to drive it to get it fixed, then having to re-test? I tried searched VOSA which took me to the direct.gov.uk website which didn't have the answer.

Any guesses on what it could fail on? Tyres are basically new, 12v 2000 W-reg, 66.5k miles - I don't really know what has be done in the passed. Got Vauxhall service history stamps but no invoices.

Check easy things like tyres/lights/brakes/exhaust/shocks etc etc. Whatever it fails on get fixed

Do you mean 'how long can I take and still get a free retest?' or 'if it fails, is there a period of time I can still drive it legally, even if it is after the date?'

?

If it fails, I know you have a period of time where you can drive away, get it fixed and then retest, but I don't know how long you get before your car is classed as 'illegal'/before you need to retest, whether it's free or not. I think it is 2 weeks, but it could be anything

Free re-test if the car stays on site. Otherwise it's half price re-test within 10 or 14 days iirc.

After the 24th, it's illegal full stop, unless it's passed.

There's no period of grace.

The only place you can drive it after that date, if it has no test, is to the MOT station.

Don't think so, IIRC the ONLY place is an MOT station.

Hmmm I swear there was a grace period. There should be if there isn't. What if the MOT centre can't repair what is wrong?!

Ahhh well, I've prewarned my mechanic. Test is a 8:30am, if it fails, it could be at the garage for 10am. Then hopefully all sorted by Saturday for a retest.

MOT's are great in the sense that cars are checked annually

But when looking ino the small print they are worth fuck all

Just becuase you have a valid MOT does not mean your car is road worthy at the time you get pulled, have a crash etc

Looking at it from another angle you could be involved in an accident and be fully road legal aprt from the MOT and the other party's car to be illegal but have a valid MOT

Don't get me wrong its a good way to check existing cars on the road but it doesn't mean the car is legal at any point within th 12 months only at the time of the test

Thought there must be a grace period, otherwise they should give you a week period when the car should be tested, not just an expiry time.

You can have the car tested whenever you want though, you don't have to have it done every year, you could do it after 3 months if you wanted, so there's no need for a week time slot

All I meant was that after the 24th, if the MOT has expired, you cannot drive the car unless it's going to the MOT station, so there's no 'period of grace'

Unless we mean different things?

I don't think we do.

I just think it's strange. How do I know my car will fail its MOT? Say I worked all through the week, could only get it tested at the weekend, so have it done on the 24th, it fails, then what am I supposed to do if the part can't be got til the middle of the week and I can only have it fitted the next Saturday.

Just seems odd to me that's all.

By grace period, I will give a better example lol.

1) I have my car tested on the 24th when the MOT expires - the car fails.
2) I am given 14 days (for example) when I can take the car away, drive it, get it fixed, then have it re-tested. After the 14 days, if I haven't had it re-tested, then I can be pulled over by the police, fined etc.

That is what I mean by probation or grace period.

Book it in before the expiry date then.

It's like food, after it's expired, you don't eat it, so you eat it a few days in advance

if you book it in for an MOT and it failed, there is a VT30 Refusal of an MOT Test Certificate (failure notice) placed against the car. Meaning that you shouldnt legally be driving it on the road at all.

It was all different under the old system. If you need any clarification ring you local test centre

Hmm ok, thanks Greg.

I did believe you Robin, just wasn't sure

Any documents you need to take to your MOT? Old MOT certificate? Insurance? V5C?

hasn't your car just been fixed after the crash deano? you'd hope they checked the car was alright after it was fixed etc.

should be alright though, mine only just failed emissions with a full system and induction kit and importantly a cold engine. the mechanic took it for a razz around the block and tested it again and it passed
