right everybody.
tomorrow i will be ordering my verniers..(diblas)
how do i set them up without paying some engineering genius to do it for me (i dont have a lift guage )
timing figures are:
exhaust - 9.8mm lift, 264/110*CRA peak timing, open 62, close 22*CRA, 1mm lift TDC.
inlet - 9.8mm lift, 264/110*CRA peak timing, open 22, close 62*CRA, 1.2mm lift TDC.
currently, i have the exh cam advanced 1 tooth, seems to run ok'ish

personally i would dial them in at zero until you can get it on the rollers, a tooth i a long way to have your timing out by.

you need 2 dial gauges (push rod type) , 1 with a long push rod.
you need a crank degree plate to put on the crank (piper cams will send you one by email if you ask nicely, print it out, back it with some card and cut it out. fit this to the crank. using a bit of wire (tig welding rod) mounted on the engine somewhere to act as a pointer:
using the dial gauge with long push rod in cylinder 1 find TDC
set the pointer on the TDC marking on the crank angle plate
using the other dial gauge bolted down onto a cam bearing bolt measure the max lift at tdc on the relevant cam follower, once you get max lift at 110 degrees BTDC then that cam is dialled in
then do the other cam.

always worth going back to the first cam after doing the second and checking the positions.
actually there was a really good guide in one of the ford mags last month, may have been fast ford, find a copy of that gives a very good explanation of how its done with pics.

well, tdc is marked on the crank pully....,
and max lift is 1mm/ 1.2mm at tdc,
so i could do that with a tape measure and a stick yeah?? (in theory)

TDC isnt marked on the crank pulley, the x16xe crank mark is actually about 20 degrees from TDC.
do it properly, tape measures and sticks wont help

you set the cam at tdc and max valve lift

right, tdc on cylinder #1 (between exh + ind stroke) the inlet valve should be just opening, and the exhaust valve just closing...... how can i set either at max lift there..
surely i want max inlet lift part way through the ind' stroke, and max exh lift partway through the exh' stroke
