is it only the power thats affected, if so i have a fused surge proector extension cable if thats all I need? or do i need to do something about the phone line etc?

phone line and power mate.
Can affect any number of things, but most commonly, routers, PC power supplies, motherboards, modems.
Most decent SP will have protection for the lot:

Line In & Out
I run my whole system on a UPS and dont bother with phone line protection. For the sake of a £40 router, the chances are getting hit are slim.

routers are fairly fragile against power surges, if you have trouble do what this lot are saying, surge protect
