my 1.4 spi cuts out when its heats up after idleing for a brief while.
its fine driving about with airflow over the engine, but it doesn't like stopping for too long at all.
when the coolant fan's been on for a while it splutters a bit then cuts out and the orange light comes on on the dash? 
would it be worth a paperclip test?, would there be any codes stored?

Is it a distributor/coil model, or DISpak?

coil i think, the one with the rotor arm its an early one L reg.

Could be the ignition coil/module overheating.
Ive had that problem on a few SPIs

whack a new distributor on it first. Then see how it goes, if not it will be the coil. Had this problem with the same engine before, distributor change fixed it.
