exhaust system is down to preference of sound, manifold..something like a janspeed 421.
inlet manifold mantzel, lexhmaul, diblias..
cams, kent, piper, shrick.

remap, a unichip would probly be the best route

I had 116bhp with;

Pipercross Viper
Lexmaul inlet manifold
Janspeed 4 branch exhaust manifold
Sportex de-cat pipe
Blueflame BFO 2.25" exhaust system
Chipwizards remap with 7200rpm rev limit.

All in all, it cost me about £700 (but would be about twice that with brand new bits), and a standard 1.6 was quicker, and cheaper to insure.

your 1.4 should be able to hold against a vtr near top range, i've kept up/overtaken a few in my old 1.4 (dual carriageways) because they're better in the upper rev range due to 16v

the vtr are a lot quicker low down due to 8v, more torque than revs

it'd probs be cheaper sticking a 1.6 in, with a better inlet (probs cost about £400 if you got a cheap inlet, and that'd get you near 115-120bhp with better filter)

Decent cams will need the pistons removing and modifying tho, so thats more cost.

and make it less driveable, the cams in the 1400/1600 engines have a lot of lift anyway (which is why the 1400 has plenty o power at high revs and feck all down low lol)

the 1600 has a fair bit more torque, and does more mpg which suprised me

Id be tempted to forget modding the 1400 and just fit a standard 1600 16v.
